Pavel Kushnir in Concert

an experimental biography that utilizes music, movement, and puppetry to explore the legacy of little known pianist Pavel Kushnir. Mr. Kushnir died in a Russian pre-trial detention centre on July 27, 2024, age 39, while attempting to lead an anti-war hunger strike. This play follows Mr. Kushnir’s life from his time with the Kursk Philharmonic until his arrest, drawn from his autobiographical novel, “Russian Cut-Up”. It is the first English translation of his writing.  Produced by UMDS, co-directed with Natalie Ings. Performed at the University of Manchester and at the University of Leeds in 2025.

Pavel Kushnir in Concert is an astonishing tribute to a lost political activist.”
